2004 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Parking Brake Cable Assy No. 3 on 2004 Scion xB?
A: The repair of the Parking Brake Cable Assy No. 3 requires starting by disconnecting the shift lever knob sub-assy (M/T transaxle), console box rear cover together with console box carpet and console box assy rear. The first step involves loosening and removing wire adjusting nut No.1 before extracting the front floor panel brace by disassembling its two holding bolts. Start by disconnecting the exhaust pipe assy front which requires removal of its 3 bolts along with front floor heat insulator No. 2. The next step requires separation of the Parking Brake Cable Assy No. 3 through removal of its four bolts and releasing it from both body and parking brake equalizer. Follow these steps to remove the rear wheel together with the rear brake drum sub-assy and front brake shoe through use of Special Service Tool: 09718-00010. The technician should use Special Service Tool: 09718-00010 to remove both the rear brake automatic adjust lever LH and rear brake shoe. Procedure to remove the Parking Brake Cable Assy No. 3 includes disconnecting it from the backing plate followed by removing the bolt. Use 4 bolts to connect the parking brake cable assy Number 3 with the parking brake cable equalizer by tightening each bolt to 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.). You should attach the backing plate to the bolt while applying high-temperature grease and tightening it to 7.8 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 69 inch lbs.). The process entails using Special Service Tool: 09718-00010 to install the rear brake shoe before adding the rear brake shoe return spring and then the rear brake automatic adjust lever LH. Use Special Service Tool: 09718-00010 again during installation. Residual socket the front brake shoe and inspect the rear drum brake installation before installing the rear brake drum sub-assy. After that, adjust the rear drum brake shoe clearance to put on the rear wheel with a 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) torque. Pre-tighten wire adjusting nut No. 1 then install front floor heat insulator No. 2 using 3 bolts that need tightening to 5.5 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.), followed by exhaust pipe assy front along with the floor panel brace front attachment using 2 bolts. Complete the work by examining the parking brake lever action then inspecting exhaust gases for any leaks.
