2005 Scion xB Parking Brake Cable Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the floor shift Parking Brake Cable assembly (ATM) on 2005 Scion xB?
A: Starting the replacement of floor shift parking lock cable assembly (ATM) requires disconnecting the battery negative terminal while taking necessary safety measures. Begin by setting the front wheels in a straight position then remove the horn button assembly followed by the steering wheel assembly, steering column cover and instrument cluster finish panel together with the instrument cluster finish panel sub-assembly lower center, console box rear cover, console box carpet and console box sub-assembly rear. The floor shift parking lock cable assembly needs to be disconnected by performing the following sequence: rotate the adjust lock cap 90 degrees clockwise then push the claw to release from the shift lock release link and use a screwdriver to disconnect from shift lever plate before removing the cable clamp. The shift lever needs to be adjusted to N position before disconnecting the cable from its upper bracket. Connect the new floor shift parking lock cable assembly while keeping the ignition in ACC or ON mode by mounting the cable to the upper bracket ensuring the lever pin receives tension from the cable beyond its stopper before clamping it. Put the lever into N position before putting the cable assembly inside the shift lever plate and tightening the casing cap. To verify automatic cable adjustment you should enter the N position with the lever pin through the end hole then move the slide cap while checking the spring movement. Follow these steps to adjust the adjust lock cap at a 90 degrees rotation while the floor shift parking lock cable must rest on the shift lever side with the ACC position key inserted, and confirm the spring slides to 8 mm (0.31 inches). The last procedure includes replacing the rear console sub-assembly with carpet and rear cover while also applying instrument cluster finish panel sub-assembly lower center followed by finish panel, steering column cover, wheel assembly, and horn button assembly. The technician then reconnects the battery terminal and checks the SRS warning sign and key interlock functionality.
