2006 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the parking brake cable on 2006 Scion xB?
A: Start cable parking brake servicing work by taking out the shift lever knob assembly for manual transaxle before moving onto the rear console box cover and console box carpet and finally taking out the rear console box assembly. Start cable repair by removing the No. 1 wire adjusting nut then pulling out the front floor panel brace using the 2 bolts, and extracting the front exhaust pipe assembly and front No. 2 floor heat insulator with their 3 respective bolts. You need to disconnect the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly by removing the nut and 3 bolts and then remove it from the body and parking brake equalizer. Begin by taking out the rear wheel as well as the rear brake drum sub-assembly and then disconnect the parking brake shoe strut LH before removal of the front brake shoe followed by the parking brake shoe strut LH and rear brake automatic adjust lever LH and rear brake shoe respectively. Complete the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly removal by disconnecting it from the backing plate by removing the bolt. The installation process requires you to link the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly to the parking brake equalizer before fastening it to the body using its attached nut and 3 bolts that must be tight to 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.). Connect the parking brake cable to the backing plate through the bolt which requires torque at 7.8 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 69 inch lbs.) while applying high-temperature grease. Rephrase the following sentence. Install the rear brake shoe then connect the rear brake automatic adjust lever LH followed by parking brake shoe strut LH and finish with front brake shoe before inserting the rear brake shoe return spring. Before putting on the rear wheel, install the rear brake drum sub-assembly while setting the correct rear brake drum shoe clearance and torque the assembly to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). The front No. 2 floor heat insulator requires installation through mounting 3 bolts with a torque specification of 5.5 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.) and following steps for front exhaust pipe assembly and front floor panel brace using 2 bolts. Start by initiating a temporary tightening of the No. 1 wire adjusting nut followed by parking brake lever travel inspection and adjustment. After that, install the rear console box assembly and its carpet and cover components along with the shift lever knob sub-assembly for manual transaxle. Exhaust gas leakage needs to be checked during the last step.
