2004 Toyota Sequoia Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the lower ball joint on 2004 Toyota Sequoia?
A: Beginning lower ball joint repair requires owners to take off the front wheel from the vehicle. The repair process begins with leaving the 4 lower ball joint set bolts loose and not removing them while disconnecting the tie rod end through removing the cotter pin and nut and using Special Service Tool: 09610-20012 to detach it from the lower ball joint. Begin the process by first removing the lower ball joint through these steps: Unhook the cotter pin together with the nut, then disconnect it from the lower suspension arm with Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 and break the 4 lower ball joint set bolts. Lift the upper suspension arm and steering knuckle and then detach the lower ball joint after which you should safely support the upper suspension arm and steering knuckle during these steps. Check the condition of lower ball joint rotation by alternately flipping the ball joint stud five times prior to torquing while using a torque wrench to rotate the nut at a rate of one turn every 3 to 5 seconds until reaching the fifth turn torque measurement as specified between 1.0 to 6.5 Nm (10 to 66 kgf-cm, 9 to 56 in.-lbf). During installation first lift the upper suspension arm together with the steering knuckle before inserting the lower ball joint then temporarily apply four bolts and later install the set nut for securing the ball joint to the lower suspension arm with a new cotter pin at a torque of 159 Nm (1,621 kgf-cm, 117 ft. lbs.). Adjust the nut to 60 degrees if the pin holes are misaligned. Fasten the tie rod end to the lower ball joint using a new nut and cotter pin together and tighten to 91 Nm (930 kgf-cm, 67 ft. lbs.) while making needed adjustments afterward. Fit the front wheel with 110 Nm torque while tightening the lower ball joint set 4 bolts to 80 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.). End the procedure by checking front wheel alignment followed by zero point calibration of steering angle sensors and their master cylinder pressure and yaw rate and deceleration sensors.
