2004 Toyota 4Runner Control Arm Parts Q&A
Q: How to overhaul the Control Arm in the Front Suspension Upper Arm ASSY LH on 2004 Toyota 4Runner?
A: Normal service of the Front Suspension Upper Arm Assembly LH starts by removing the front disc wheel followed by hand-testing ball joint looseness through up-and-down arm shaking. Taking off the 2 bolts will separate the skid control sensor wire. First use a jack to support the front suspension lower arm LH before you take off its clip and nut. Use Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 to disconnect the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle before finishing the removal by taking out the bolt and bracket along with the bolt, 2 washers, and the nut that brings down the front suspension upper arm assembly. Remove the front suspension upper arm bush LH by using Special Service Tool: 09613-26010 and 09710-22021 (09710-01031) and 09950-00020 with a press to extract the bush from the front side while following the same steps for the rear side replacement. Before installing the nut on the ball joint conduct a five-cycle test by rotating the ball joint stud once before tightening it with a torque wrench set to 3 - 5 seconds for each turn at a maximum torque of 4.5 Nm (46 kgf-cm, 40 inch lbs.). Inspect both the ball joint dust cover for leaks as well as potential cracking during the procedure. Reinstall a new front suspension upper arm bush LH by applying Special Service Tool: 09710-26010 (09710-05061) and a press on the front side before using it again for the rear side. To prepare the front suspension upper arm assembly install the parts that include assembly, bolt, 2 washers, and nut while tightening them loosely. Afterward, mount the bracket to its place using bolt and achieve torque setting of 5.8 Nm (59 kgf-cm, 51 inch lbs.). The procedures for installation require a new nut and clip to receive 110 Nm (1,120 kgf-cm, 81 ft. lbs.) torque before attaching the skid control sensor wire to the 2 bolts which require 13 Nm (127 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) torque. To complete the remedy install and torque the front disc wheel to 112 Nm (1,140 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.), stabilize the suspension system and fully tighten the front suspension upper arm assembly nut to 115 Nm (1,170 kgf-cm, 85 ft. lbs.). Examine and review front wheel alignment at the last step.
