2003 Toyota Prius Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Wheel Bearing on 2003 Toyota Prius?
A: The first step to servicing and repairing the wheel bearing involves taking off the rear wheel along with the brake drum. Set a dial indicator next to the center of the axle hub to measure bearing backlash when checking components; the maximum tolerance for backlash is 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch) hence replacing the axle hub assembly if this limit is surpassed. The surface of the axle hub located away from the hub bolt needs inspection for deviations up to 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch). If this threshold is reached, the replacement of the axle hub assembly becomes necessary. The ABS speed sensor connector should be detached before removing the axle hub assembly through automatic adjusting lever extraction and shoe adjuster and adjusting lever spring removal while dissembling the 4 bolts. Maintain stable support for the rear brake assembly when you work on this operation. Install the 4 bolts to attach the axle hub assembly by applying 52 Nm torque (525 kgf-cm, 38 ft. lbs.), and complete installation by putting back the automatic adjusting lever and shoe adjuster and adjusting lever spring. After connecting the ABS speed sensor connector to the axle hub assembly you should check for axle hub deviation and bearing backlash before installing the brake drum along with rear wheel by torquing the wheel to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Verify the signal coming from the ABS speed sensor at the conclusion of the process.
