2003 Toyota Prius Speed Sensor Parts Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the rear wheel speed sensor on 2003 Toyota Prius?
A: The procedure for taking care of the rear wheel speed sensor begins by uninstalling the wheel and disconnecting the speed sensor cable. The next step involves removing the speed sensor with the rear axle hub by driving out both its pins using a pin punch and hammer tool to detaching its attachments through Special Service Tool: 09520-00031 before placing the hub in a soft jaws vise. When the axle hub assembly suffers either a drop impact or strong shock it requires immediate replacement. The proper combination of Special Service Tools 09520-00031 along with 09520-00040 09521-00020 09950-00020 and two 12 mm diameter 1.5 mm pitch bolts should be used for unmounting the speed sensor while protecting the sensor rotor and preventing contact damage to the axle hub and speed sensor surfaces. Installation of the new sensor wire harness demands removing the seat cushion and seatback and quarter trim followed by disconnection of the wire harness connector then unfastening the 2 bolts and 2 nuts with 5.5 Nm (56 kgf-cm, 49 inch lbs.) torque that secure the sensor harness to the lower arm and body before installing the harness with its grommet. Place the speed sensor on top of the axle hub so the connector faces downward and ensure the contacting surfaces remain clean along with the sensor rotor. To install the new speed sensor use Special Service Tool: 09214-76011 and a press while pressing it straight and gradually without using a hammer directly against the sensor. After fitting the speed sensor to the rear axle one must reconnect the speed sensor connector, reinstall the rear wheel and torque the wheel to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) before verifying the speed sensor signal.
