2004 Toyota Prius Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace a Speed Sensor on 2004 Toyota Prius?
A: The replacement of the skid control sensor begins by removing the rear wheel followed by removing the rear brake drum sub-assembly and separating the skid control sensor wire. You can start by wiring 4 hub nuts onto 4 rear axle hub bolts while installing an aluminum plate into a vice below the assembly. A replacement becomes necessary for the assembly if it falls or encounters a powerful shock. The speed sensor needs to be separated from the rear axle hub and bearing assembly by removing the 2 pins from Special Service Tool: 09520-00031 when using the tools (09520-00031) together with 2 bolts (90101-12007) to remove the speed sensor from its attachment point using a 3 mm pin punch or hammer. Pull the speed sensor away from the skid control sensor rotor while moving it in a straightforward motion, then replace the whole rear axle hub and bearing unit if rotor damage occurred. You need to protect both the sensor assembly attachment points and the speed sensor and its associated rotor parts from any foreign substances. The speed sensor installation requires thorough cleaning of its fitting surface using white gasoline to prevent contamination followed by inserting the sensor into position with its connector at the lowest point and the narrow side facing downward. The Special Service Tool: 09214-76011 along with a press must be used to flatten the speed sensor against the assembly while you should not use a hammer and stay alert for any detecting contents on the sensor surface. The installation process requires reassembly of the rear axle hub & bearing assembly combined with the skid control sensor wire before adding the rear brake drum sub-assembly and the rear wheel assembly followed by torque settings of 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). The last step includes examining rear wheel alignment and inspecting the ABS speed sensor signal.
