  • Q: How to replace a Speed Sensor on 2005 Toyota Prius?
    A: The replacement of the skid control sensor demands the removal of the rear wheel along with rear brake drum sub-assembly followed by skid control sensor wire disassembly. You must put 4 hub nuts onto the 4 rear axle hub bolts before installing an aluminum plate into a vice below the assembly. A replaced or severely shocked assembly needs immediate replacement. Place the Special Service Tool: 09520-00031 aside by removing its two pins so you can detach the speed sensor from the rear axle hub and bearing assembly at specific points with Special Service Tool: 09520-00040 and two bolts (90101-12007) until you separate Attachment (09521-00010) using a 3mm pin punch or hammer by pulling the sensor straight off without damaging the skid control sensor rotor. Production of the rear axle hub and bearing assembly becomes necessary whenever the rotor gets damaged. When installing the speed sensor never touch the surface it contacts the assembly and prevent the rotor from attaching foreign matter. Apply white gasoline to the speed sensor fitting surface to prevent contamination followed by installation of the speed sensor to the rear axle hub and bearing assembly while keeping the connector in its lowest position and placing the narrow assembly side below. Apply Special Service Tool: 09214-76011 and a press to press the speed sensor into position against the assembly. During insertion avoid using a hammer and check for debris on both the detecting portion and insertion direction of the sensor. Install the rear axle hub & bearing assembly followed by the skid control sensor wire and finally install the rear brake drum sub-assembly and the rear wheel ensuring proper torque of 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). The inspection of rear wheel alignment and ABS speed sensor signal must be completed as the last step.
