Q: How to service and repair the rear wheel speed sensor on 2002 Toyota Prius?
A: Service and repair of the rear wheel speed sensor begins by unmounting the wheel followed by disconnecting the speed sensor connector. Use a pin punch and hammer to drive out the two pins from Special Service Tool: 09520-00031 while detaching 2 attachments from the speed sensor with the rear axle hub before placing the axle hub in a soft jaw vise. Camshaft replacement is required when the axle hub assembly encounters a drop or powerful impact. To prevent harm to the sensor rotor use Special Service Tool: 09520-00031 (including 09520-00040, 09521-00020, 09950-00020) with two 12 mm bolts having 1.5 mm pitch to detach the speed sensor providing safety for both the axle hub surface and speed sensor. To replace the speed sensor wire harness proceed by removing the seat cushion and seatback along with quarter trim and disconnecting the wire harness connector before uninstalling the 2 bolts and 2 nuts which secure the sensor harness to the lower arm and body at 5.5 Nm (56 kgf-cm, 49 inch lbs.) torque requirement and installa new wire harness with the grommet. Prior to placement install a wash on the axle hub contacting surface and new speed sensor while removing all foreign items from the sensor rotor. After this place the speed sensor onto the hub axle with its connector at the bottom. Use Special Service Tool: 09214-76011 and a press to place the new speed sensor onto its position using a straight and slow press motion without hammer contact. Installation of the speed sensor includes joining the connector before placing the rear wheel into position. Torque it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) and confirm the speed sensor signal.
