2001 Toyota Prius Speed Sensor Parts Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the rear wheel speed sensor on 2001 Toyota Prius?
A: Service and repair of the rear wheel speed sensor requires removing the rear wheel and unconnecting the speed sensor connector. First apply a pin punch tool to drive out the two pins from the speed sensor with the rear axle hub before detaching the two components from Special Service Tool: 09520-00031. Mount the rear axle hub onto a soft jaw vise while you should replace the axle assembly if it experiences a hard shock or drop. Using the designated tools, Special Service Tool: 09520-00031 (09520-00040, 09521-00020), 09950-00020 and two 12 mm diameter bolts with 1.5 mm pitch, remove the speed sensor with proper rotor protection and surface contact maintenance of axle hub and sensor. The replacement process starts with seat cushion and back removal along with quarter trim before disconnecting the wire harness connector and unthreading 2 bolts and 2 nuts that keep the sensor harness attached to lower arm and body components using a torque of 5.5 Nm (56 kgf-cm, 49 inch lbs.), allowing new sensor wire harness installation with the grommet. To install the speed sensor you should clean both the axle hub surface and the new sensor while ensuring the rotor stays free of foreign substances. Move the speed sensor so its connector faces downward before you install the new speed sensor through Special Service Tool: 09214-76011 which should get a slow and straight push from the press device without hitting the sensor directly. After affixing the rear axle to its original position you should install the speed sensor while connecting its connector. Then reinstall the wheel and torque it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) before conducting a speed sensor signal check.
