2003 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you replace the Clock Spring Assembly / Spiral Cable on 2003 Toyota 4Runner?
A: Start the Clock Spring Assembly / Clock Spring replacement process by disconnecting the battery negative terminal along with setting the front wheels to a straight position. Begin the Clock Spring Assembly / Clock Spring replacement process by removing steering wheel cover lower No.2 and No.3 along with the horn button assembly and steering wheel assembly with Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021). The next step involves removing the lower steering column cover after unscrewing its three fixtures. Then proceed to remove the upper steering column cover. The disconnect procedure involves removing 4 screws from the Clock Spring sub-assembly after separating the Air Bag connector from the Clock Spring sub-assembly connector. A Clock Spring sub-assembly should be replaced when you find any scratches, cracks, dents or chipping during inspection. After keeping the front wheels facing straight ahead set the turn signal switch to neutral then install the 4 screws on the new Clock Spring sub-assembly while removing any lock pin present. After connecting the Air Bag connector and the connector you must place the steering column cover with three screws. A proper centering of the Clock Spring requires users to disconnect the battery negative terminal while the ignition switch remains OFF for 90 seconds. Turn the cable counterclockwise until it gets harder to rotate and execute another clockwise rotation of about 2.5 turns to align the marks while keeping in mind that the cable will pivot twice as much toward both directions from the center. Complete the installation by mounting the steering wheel assembly after attaching the horn button assembly and perform an inspection of the horn button before checking the SRS warning light.
