2002 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Service and Repair Wheel Bearings on 2002 Toyota Tacoma?
A: The wheel bearing service starts with component removal for RZN191L-TRPDKAB, RZN196L-RPDKAB, RZN196L-PRPDKAB, VZN195L-CRPDKAB, VZN195L-PRPDKAB models. A soft jaw vise should secure the axle hub to remove its oil seal (inside) through screwdriver usage. You should follow the same procedure to remove the grease cap on Pre runner versions. A chisel combined with a hammer can help loosen the staked portion of the lock nut before using Special Service Tool: 09318-12010 to eliminate the lock nut along with the ABS speed sensor rotor/spacer but do not permit the rotor's serration to become scratched during this process. Use special tool 09710-30021 along with 09950-40011 (including 09951-04020 and others) to detach the hub after removing the steering knuckle dust cover and 4 bolts securing the axle hub to the knuckle. Use a screwdriver to extract the outside oil seal while snap ring pliers together with Special Service Tool: 09950-60020 (09951-00810), 09950-70010 (09951-07150) remove the bearing from the steering knuckle using a press. The reassembly process requires the use of Special Service Tools: 09527-17011 and 09950-00020 (09951-00910) together with a press to install a brand-new bearing which should be followed by the snap ring installation. Mount a new outside oil seal using Special Service Tool: 09223-15030, 09527-17011 along with a plastic hammer that requires MP grease coating of the oil seal lip. Use 4 bolts to reinstall the dust cover while torquing them to 18 Nm (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.) then install the axle hub with Special Service Tool: 09649-17010 and a press. The Pre runner installation requires a new lock nut secured with Special Service Tool: 09318-12010 before torquing it to 274 Nm (2,800 kgf-cm, 203 ft. lbs.) and staking it with a chisel and hammer. The 4WD requires installation of the bearing spacer with Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00650), 09950-70010 (09951-07150) and press followed by new inside oil seal installation through Special Service Tool: 09527-17011 and plastic hammer using MP grease on the oil seal lip. Install the grease cap of the Pre runner as the last step.
