2002 Toyota Tacoma Ball Joint Parts Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the lower ball joint on 2002 Toyota Tacoma?
A: The service and repair process for lower ball joints begins by removing the front wheel while tightening it to 110 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.). The first step requires disconnecting the tie rod end through reducing bolt torque to 80 Nm (820 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.) without removing them before removing the cotter pin and nut with a torque of 90 Nm (930 kgf-cm, 67 ft. lbs.). Nut tightness should be increased to 60 degrees whenever the cotter pin hole misalignment occurs. The tie rod end detaching process from the steering knuckle requires tool 09610-20012. To detach the lower ball joint remove its cotter pin followed by nut with 140 Nm torque (1,450 kgf-cm, 103 ft. lbs.) then close the nut to 60 degrees when necessary. You should disconnect the lower ball joint from the lower suspension arm by using Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 while orienting the cotter pin hole to face forward. First remove the four bolts and after that lift the upper suspension arm together with the steering knuckle to take out the lower ball joint while properly securing the upper suspension arm and steering knuckle. The ball joint lower rotation condition should be checked by performing five stud rotations before torque application with a wrench which needs to turn the nut one complete revolution in 2-4 seconds on the fifth turn while torque should range between 0.1 - 2.5 Nm (1 - 25 kgf-cm, 1 - 22 inch lbs.). Resetting the front wheel alignment should be performed after installation and the sequence for reinstallation consists of the opposite steps to removal.
