2002 Toyota Sequoia Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service the rear shock absorber on 2002 Toyota Sequoia?
A: Before servicing the rear shock absorber it is necessary to first remove both rear wheels tight with a torque of 110 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.). Problem solving requires two steps: first secure the rear axle housing with a jack followed by separating the shock absorber from the axle housing through bolt removal at 87 Nm (887 kgf-cm, 64 ft. lbs.). The other side requires the same procedure where the nut and two retainers and cushion and shock absorber must be removed while applying 58 Nm (591 kgf-cm, 43 ft. lbs) torque to the piston rod before separating the two retainers and cushion from the shock absorber. The installation requires first disconnecting left-hand and right-hand stabilizer bar links using 69 Nm (704 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.) torque for the two nuts before removing the lateral control rod assembly with 140 Nm (1,428 kgf-cm, 103 ft. lbs.) torque for the nut and washer and bolt but torque the bolt and nut only after stabilizing the suspension. The axle housing needs to be lowered slowly to protect the brake line and parking brake cable and to unplug the coil spring, follow spring and insulator and confirm proper alignment of the coil spring end for reinstallation. Compression and extension tests on the shock absorber rod will help identify unusual noises or abnormal resistance; if such issues are detected the device needs replacement. During disposal operations firstly extend the shock absorber rod until fully open then drill a hole at the cylinder while protecting against chip dispersal. To replace the bushing Special Service Tools 09710-14013 (09710-00061) and 09710-28012 (09710-07031), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) must be used with a press to remove the old component and install a fresh one through these same tools. The procedure for installation should be performed in the opposite direction compared to removal.
