2001 Toyota Sequoia Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the front shock absorber with coil spring on 2001 Toyota Sequoia?
A: The servicing process for the front shock absorber along with its coil spring begins with removing the front wheel. Start the shock absorber lower suspension arm separation by uninstalling the lower side set nut and washer while keeping the bolt in place. First remove the lower suspension arm by prying it down while accomplishing the bolt extraction which leads to shock absorber detachment. The subsequent step involves removing the shock absorber with coil spring through the removal of three characteristic nuts. Apply a 12,740 N force using a spring compressor tool which must stretch the coil spring before disassembly begins. This process should avoid compressing the spring more than needed and free the suspension support of the coil spring. The process begins with center nut removal from the suspension support then proceed with removing two retainers and cushion and support and spring. The shock absorber inspection requires compressing and extending the rod while listening for abnormal resistance and unusual sounds. Replacement is needed for any detected abnormalities. To dispose of the shock absorber first extend the rod completely then drill a hole into the cylinder to release the gas content while protecting any flying chips. To perform the replacement procedure use Special Service Tool: 09710-30031 (09710-03161, 09710-03171) together with a press while avoiding any contact between the bushing and grease or oil. A spring compressor should be used to compress the coil spring during reinstallation before fitting it on the shock absorber so the lower end can enter the spring seat gap. Before final tightening of the new suspension support center nut, secure the cushion and two retainers and suspension support to the piston rod and position the suspension support correctly before torqueing to 25 Nm (250 kgf-cm, 18 ft. lbs.). The upper shock absorber side gets installed to the chassis frame by tightening three nuts to 64 Nm (650 kgf-cm, 47 ft. lbs.) torque while the lower side should be connected to the lower suspension arm by a bolt with washer and nut receiving 135 Nm (1,400 kgf-cm, 100 ft. lbs.) torque. After installing the front wheel perform a torque of 110 Nm that is equivalent to 1,150 kgf-cm and 83 ft-lbs.
