2001 Toyota Sequoia Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the upper control arm on 2001 Toyota Sequoia?
A: The upper control arm repair process begins by taking away the shock absorber with coil spring followed by removing the 2 bolts from speed sensor wire harness clamps between the steering knuckle and upper suspension arm. The upper ball joint requires removal of the cotter pin and loosening the nut before using Special Service Tool: 09950-40011 (09951-04010, 09952-04010, 09953-04020, 09954-04010, 09955-04031, 09958-04011) to disconnect it. Ensure the steering knuckle stays secure before you remove the nut. The rear fender apron should have its four clips and the rear fender apron seal removed while separating the 2 brake lines and fuel line by unfastening the nut and brake line clamp. The next operation should involve the upper suspension arm removal by extracting its nut, bolt, and two washers from the assembly. Use the chisel and hammer to pry up the bushing flange while removing it with Special Service Tool: 09613-26010, 09631-20060, 09950-00020 and a press. A new bushing can be installed with Special Service Tool: 09631-12090, 09710-30021 (09710-03051) while using a press alongside a steel plate. The upper suspension arm assembly requires installation by fitting two washers and bolt and nut then stabilizing the suspension before torquing the nut to 98 Nm (1,000 kgf-cm, 72 ft. lbs.). The brake and fuel line clamp needs 5.5 Nm (56 kgf-cm, 49 inch lbs.) torque before installing the fender apron seal rear. To attach the upper ball joint to the suspension arm you need to use a new nut and cotter pin before extending the nut at a 60° angle if there is misalignment between the holes and torquing it to 105 Nm (1,100 kgf-cm, 77 ft. lbs.). The technician completes the procedure by connecting speed sensor wire harness clamps at 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.) while reinstalling the shock absorber with coil spring followed by a front wheel alignment check.
