2001 Toyota Sequoia Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove and install the lower ball joint on 2001 Toyota Sequoia?
A: The first step requires removing the front wheel before slowly unbolt the 4 lower ball joint set bolts but leaving them in place. Special Service Tool: 09610-20012 should be used to remove the tie rod end from the lower ball joint by first disconnecting the nut and then the cotter pin. You must start by removing the lower ball joint after discarding the cotter pin and nut then employing Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 to disconnect it from the lower suspension arm before extracting the 4 lower ball joint set bolts. Insteading of removing the lower ball joint, secure the upper suspension arm and steering knuckle before extracting the lower ball joint. Before fastening the nut examine how the lower ball joint boot appears along with rotating ball joint studs 5 times to assess movement before final installation. Open the torque wrench nut at a stable pace of one turn within 2 to 4 seconds and read torque on the fifth turn until it reaches 0.1 to 2.5 Nm (1 to 25 kgf-cm, 1 to 22 inch lbs.). Install the lower ball joint by lifting the upper suspension arm and steering knuckle then put in place the 4 bolts before attaching the set nut to join the lower ball joint with the lower suspension arm while adding a new cotter pin and tightening to 140 Nm (1,450 kgf-cm, 103 ft. lbs.). Additional tightness of 60 degrees should be applied to the nut if the holes for the cotter pin are not aligned. Install the lower ball joint onto the tie rod end by using the proper nut and new cotter pin and tightening it to 91 Nm (930 kgf-cm, 67 ft. lbs.). Adjust the nut when needed. Reinstall the front wheel by torquing it to 110 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.) after securing all 4 lower ball joint set bolts with 80 Nm (820 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.). The alignment of the front wheel requires ultimate inspection.
