2001 Toyota Sequoia Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How do you remove the coil spring and inspect the shock absorber on 2001 Toyota Sequoia?
A: The first step to remove a coil spring is to torque remove the rear wheels to 110 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.). After jacking up the rear axle housing you need to disconnect the shock absorber through its bolt that requires 87 Nm (887 kgf-cm, 64 ft. lbs.) of torque. Proceed to the other side of the shock absorber by holding the piston rod before you untighten the nut and remove both retainers and compliment along with the shock absorber using a torque of 58 Nm (591 kgf-cm, 43 ft. lbs.). Finally remove the retainers and cushion from the shock absorber. Next disconnect left-hand and right-hand stabilizer bar links by removing the 2 nuts with a torque of 69 Nm (704 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.), then disconnect the lateral control rod by taking off the nut and washer and bolt with a torque of 140 Nm (1,428 kgf-cm, 103 ft. lbs.), after ensuring to torque the nut and bolt after stabilizing the suspension during installation. Lower the axle carefully to prevent brake line and parking cable failure and simultaneously extract coil spring, follow spring and insulator. During inspection operate the shock absorber rod through full compression and extension to detect irregular resistance or unwanted sounds before discontinuing use of an abnormal component. Drill a hole in the cylinder after extending the shock absorber rod to drain the gas contents while controlling flying debris from drilling. To replace a bushing Special Service Tools 09710-14013 (09710-00061), 09710-28012 (09710-07031), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) together with a press are necessary to remove the old one before installing a new bushing.
