    Q:
How to service and repair the upper control arm on Toyota Tundra? Posted by Customer
    A:
A technician must start upper control arm service by removing the shock absorber that includes the coil spring. Before servicing the upper control arm disconnect the ABS speed sensor wire harness by taking 2 bolts from the steering knuckle and upper suspension arm. To disconnect the upper ball joint first remove the cotter pin before unwinding the nut while using Special Service Tool: 09950-40011 (09951-04010, 09952-04010, 09953-04020, 09954-04010, 09955-04031, 09958-04011) which allows you to safely remove the nut after securing the steering knuckle. The fender apron seal requires removing 4 clips before separating the 2 brake lines and fuel line allowing complete removal of the brake line clamp and nut. Proceed by taking out the nut as well as the bolt and both washers to remove the upper suspension arm. Usage of Special Service Tools 09613-26010, 09631-20060, 09950-00020 along with 09631-12090, 09710-30021 (09710-03051), and a press is required to remove and install the bushing. The installation process requires Special Service Tool: 09631-12090 combined with 09710-30021 (09710-03051), a press device and a steel plate. Installation of the upper suspension arm requires two washers, a bolt, and nut to be attached before torqueing to 98 Nm (1,000 kgf-cm, 72 ft. lbs.) while taking suspension stabilization steps before tightening the final nut. Reinstall the brake and fuel line clamp before putting back the rear fender apron seal. Torque them both to 5.5 Nm (56 kgf-cm, 49 inch lbs.). To attach the upper ball joint to the upper suspension arm use a new nut and cotter pin and torque it to 105 Nm (1,100 kgf-cm, 77 ft. lbs.) only after aligning the nut holes at a maximum of 60 degrees. Follow these steps to install the shock absorber into any ABS system maintenance: 1) Secure the ABS speed sensor wire harness clamps by torqueing them to 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.) then continue with installing the shock absorber with coil spring followed by checking front wheel alignment.
