2002 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to overhaul the parking brake shoe on 2002 Toyota Highlander?
A: You can start repairs on parking brake shoes by first removing the rear wheel while avoiding flexible hose disconnection during the process of separating the rear disc brake caliper assembly LH. Firing the parking brake enables removal of the rear disc while you mark both the axle hub and the disc for identification. Difficult shoe removal requires wheel-turning adjustment until wheel freeness is achieved. Use a brake drum gauge to inspect the inside diameter of the brake disc since it should measure 170 mm (6.69 inch) and cannot exceed 171 mm (6.73 inch). Use needle-nose pliers to remove two tension springs after which you should slide out the front shoe to access the compression spring. First disconnect the parking brake shoe strut LH and brake shoe by using a tool to release the cup claw and separate the parking brake cable from the shoe lever and take off all components including the tension spring and shoe adjuster screw set and the two shoe hold-down springs and four cups and two pins. The C-washer removal requires a screwdriver while you should separate the shim and shoe lever from the parking brake shoe. The shoe lining's thickness measurement with a ruler must reach 1.0 mm (0.039 inch) and replacement is needed if it measures 1.0 mm (0.039 inch) or less or shows heavy wear. The brake disc contact must be checked through a disc-chalk application followed by necessary shoe lining grinding. High-temperature grease should be applied to the shoe attached surface on the backing plate before parking brake shoe assembly while adding a new C-washer and connecting shoe lever and shim to the rear shoe. Use a feeler gauge to measure the clearance while the acceptable measurement is below 0.35 mm (0.0138 inch); if the measurement exceeds the limit, replace the shim. To finish installation users should grease the adjusting bolt then add the shoe adjusting screw set with tension spring followed by attaching the two pins four cups and two shoe hold-down springs. The parking brake cable needs to be hooked to the shoe lever as you install the front and rear parking brake shoe and then the parking brake shoe strut LH followed by compression spring and return tension springs. All installed parts need to be in correct position without any oil or grease present on the friction surfaces. Before adjusting the clearance, put on the rear disc before installing the hub nuts and removing the hole plug. Expand the parking brake shoes by turning the adjuster to lock the disc and return the adjuster to achieve smooth disc rotation matching 8 notches of adjustment space. Install the hole plug only after inspecting brake drag. Connect the rear disc brake caliper assembly LH with two bolts at 47 Nm (480 kgf-cm, 35 ft. lbs.), then install the rear wheel with 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.), and conclude with adjusting the parking brake pedal travel.
