2002 Toyota Echo Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Service and Repair a Wheel Bearing on 2002 Toyota Echo?
A: Service and repair operations for wheel bearings start with removing the rear wheel combined with brake drum components. The bearing backlash and axle hub deviation can be checked with a dial indicator placed near the center of the axle hub. Belief exceeds 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch) requires changing the axle hub assembly. Check the deviation at the axle hub surface using a dial indicator outside the hub bolt; a maximum of 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch) exists before axle hub assembly replacement is needed. Vehicle owners should disconnect their ABS speed sensor before removing the axle hub assembly by unfastening the four bolts while maintaining a stable rear brake assembly. The axle hub assembly needs four bolts which should be torqued to 52 Nm until they reach 526 kgf-cm (38 ft. lbs.). Reinstall the axle hub speed sensor connector to its assembly position while checking bearing backlash and axle hub deviation. Mount the brake drum and the rear wheel before performing torque adjustment of the wheel at 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Rear wheel ABS systems require inspection of the ABS speed sensor signal as the final check.
