Hub Assembly

The servicing process of the wheel bearing starts by taking off the rear wheel and the brake drum. Start by setting a dial indicator near the center of the axle hub to measure bearing backlash; perform this check again to measure axle hub deviation. These measurements must be less than 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch) for both checks to proceed with the replacement of the axle hub assembly. A dial indicator test of axle hub surface outside the hub bolt must not exceed 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch) maximum before replacing the axle hub assembly. Before uninstalling the axle hub assembly with its 4 bolts the ABS speed sensor connector must be detached while properly supporting the rear brake assembly. Caution: Install the axle hub assembly by using 4 bolts before tightening them to 52 Nm (526 kgf.cm, 38 ft. lbs.). Common usage of ABS requires reconnecting the ABS speed sensor connector to the axle hub assembly while evaluating bearing backlash and axle hub deviation again. You should install the brake drum and rear wheel after torquing the wheel to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf.cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Inspect the ABS speed sensor signal when the vehicle has ABS as its feature.

You will start wheel hub service and repair operations by removing the rear wheel together with the brake drum. A dial indicator should be used near the axle hub center to measure backlash. Acceptable backlash should not exceed 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch) because this indicates an issue that requires a new axle hub assembly. The surface deviation outside the hub bolt must be checked with a dial indicator and the measurement should not exceed 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch) to avoid replacing the axle hub assembly. To prevent damage to the rear brake assembly disconnect the ABS speed sensor connector before removing the axle hub assembly by removing and properly supporting its 4 bolts. The 4 bolts of the axle hub assembly must be installed first before torque Application reaches 52 Nm (526 kgf-cm, 38 ft. lbs.). Reinstall the ABS speed sensor connector to the axle hub while verifying the bearing backlash and axle hub deviation with the sensor connectors operating. Affix the brake drum followed by the rear wheel while torquing the wheel to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). ABS-equipped vehicles will require a signal check from the ABS speed sensor.

Take care not to damage the bearing while installing the axle hub.

Use Special Service Tool: 09950-40011 (and its variants), 09950-60010, and 09951-00370.

Check the ABS speed sensor signal.

Begin disassembly by removing the ABS speed sensor.

Unscrew the 3 bolts with a torx wrench (T30).
