The service and repair of the rear wheel hub starts with inspecting the vehicle system by removing the rear wheel and rear brake drum sub-assembly. An assessment of bearing backlash using a dial indicator near the center of the wheel hub requires checking that the measurement remains below a maximum of 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch). If the measurement exceeds this threshold, replace the rear wheel hub and bearing assembly. The dial indicator check inside the hub bolt needs to reveal less than 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch) deviation; an amount beyond that standard requires replacement of the rear wheel hub and bearing assembly. Follow the identical steps for right-hand and left-hand sides when removing the component by first taking off the rear wheel along with its brake drum sub-assembly followed by disconnecting the skid control sensor connector and uninstalling the four hub and bearing assembly bolts. When installing the assembly combine the hub with the bearing and bolt it to the 4 mounting points with a torque of 61 Nm (622 kgf-cm, 45 ft. lbs.) before reattaching the skid control sensor connector without twisting the sensor wire. Before reattaching the rear brake drum sub-assembly and rear wheel the technician needs to inspect rear wheel deviation and backlash before torquing the wheel to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). At the end of the process verify that the ABS speed sensor signal performs correctly.

Vehicle inspections of the rear wheel hub require technicians to begin with removing the rear wheel followed by the rear brake drum sub-assembly. Use a dial indicator at the center of the wheel hub to check the rear axle bearing backlash which must stay below 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch) otherwise replace the rear wheel hub and bearing assembly. Use a dial indicator to measure wheel hub deviation inside the hub bolt surface which should be less than 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch). An exceeding measurement requires you to replace the rear wheel hub and bearing assembly.

Start wheel bearing service by removing the ABS speed sensor then extract its 2 pins with a pin punch and hammer before detaching the 2 components using Special Service Tool: 09520-00031 (09520-00040, 09521-00020). Put the axle hub assembly in a soft jaw vise and replace it if it encounters a heavy impact. Disconnect the ABS speed sensor using tools 09520-00031 (09520-00040, 09521-00020), 09950-00020 with two 12 mm x 1.5 mm bolts while avoiding sensor rotor debris and pulling straight to prevent damage. A new axle hub assembly needs replacement plus the sensor contact surfaces must stay free of scratches when the rotor sustains damage. After cleaning both axle hub and new ABS speed sensor parts install the sensor onto the hub base plate keeping its connector downward. Use Special Service Tool 09214-76011 together with a press to install new ABS speed sensor. Press it slowly and straight while preventing direct hammer contact and inspecting the detection area for foreign particles.

The bearing should also be replaced.

Use Special Service Tool: 09930-00010.

The maximum allowable backlash is 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch).

Take out the 4 bolts and securely support the rear brake assembly.

Use Special Service Tool: 09608-32010, 09950-60020 (09951-00680), 09950-70010 (09951-07150) and a press.

Begin by removing the snap ring with snap ring pliers.

Use the 4 bolts and torque them to 52 Nm (526 kgf-cm, 38 ft. lbs.).

Install a new bearing using Special Service Tool: 09950-60020 (09951-00680), 09950-70010 (09951-07150) and a press.
