2002 Toyota Celica Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the rear Sway Bar Kit on 2002 Toyota Celica?
A: Start the rear sway bar kit servicing process by taking off the rear wheel after tightening it with 103 Nm torque. The service engineer should start by detaching the tailpipe and heat insulator after removing 2 bolts and springs and then the gasket and 3 O-rings followed by the tailpipe with a torque of 43 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.) and final removal of 4 bolts from the heat insulator. Begin by removing the sway bar links through the process of taking off 2 nuts then the sway bar link before applying torque at 44 Nm (449 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.); avoid rotating ball joints when removing nuts so secure a 5 mm hexagon wrench onto the stud. Perform the identical steps on the sway bar bracket and bushings on the opposite side. Two bolts need removal as well as the bracket and bushing to proceed with installation by applying a 18 Nm torque (184 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.). Place the bushing outside the sway bar kit stopper during installation and perform the same steps on the other side. Finally, remove the sway bar kit. During the inspection process verify that the ball joint stud develops proper rotation by rotating it five times before tightening the nut using a torque wrench with one continuous turn lasting 2-4 seconds to acquire readings on the fifth rotation at a torque between 0.05 - 1.0 Nm (0.5 - 10 kgf-cm, 0.4 - 8.7 inch lbs.). The procedure for installation runs in the mirror opposite direction of all removal steps.
