2002 Toyota Camry Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the power steering pump on 2002 Toyota Camry?
A: The overhaul of a power steering pump starts by removing the right-hand front wheel and powering out the steering fluid before taking off both the front fender liner and the front fender apron seal on the right-hand side. The next step is to take off the fan and generator V belt from Special Service Tool: 09249-63010 while you unfasten the oil reservoir to pump hose No. 1 by unclipping it. Protect the V belt when removing fluid from it. You should disconnect the pressure feed tube assembly through two steps: first separate the connector from the power steering oil pressure switch then hold the pressure port union with a spanner (27mm) before removing the union bolt and its gasket. Use Special Service Tool: 09249-63010 to separate the vane pump assembly through disconnecting the pressure switch connector and removing bolt A followed by bolt B and the vane pump assembly. Attach the vane pump assembly in a vise through an aluminum plate by using Special Service Tool: 09630-00014 (09631-00132). The repair procedure starts with eliminating the power steering suction port union while dislodging the O-ring followed by removing the pressure port union and its O-ring before extracting the flow control valve and its compression spring and the power steering oil pressure switch avoiding any accidental drops. Discard the power steering switch for replacement if it shows signs of damage. Disassemble the vane pump housing rear by removing 4 bolts and O-ring and continuing to detach the w/pulley shaft sub-assembly and vane pump rotor as well as vane pump cam ring and vane pump side plate front with its O-ring. Use Special Service Tool: 09631-10030 together with a hammer to tap out the vane pump housing oil seal while avoiding damage to the bushing. You should measure the oil clearance with a micrometer and caliper gauge while making sure it remains within acceptable standards. Check the height and thickness of each vane pump rotor component along with measuring its length and its fit with the vane plate groove. The flow control valve requires inspection for operational smoothness while checking for leaks before measuring its compression spring's free length. You should replace the complete vane pump assembly if its components show either damage or specification mismatch. Position the new vane pump housing oil seal with proper orientation before installing the vane pump side plate front along with its O-ring while keeping the dents precisely aligned. Several steps follow for installation including the vane pump cam ring together with w/pulley shaft sub-assembly and rotor that requires positioning with its inscribed mark facing outward then plates and a new snap ring are added. The vane pump housing rear receives a new O-ring before alignment and the bolts achieve 22 Nm (224 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.) torque. Test the vane pump rotation torque for smoothness and align it within the provided specifications before putting the power steering oil pressure switch into place with a fresh O-ring while torquing it to 21 Nm (214 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.). The technician should install the flow control valve compression spring then insert the flow control valve while adding the pressure port union which requires torquing to 69 Nm (704 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.) followed by the power steering suction port union with torquing to 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). The vane pump assembly installation requires first tightening nut A temporarily, then torquing bolt B to 43 Nm (438 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.) followed by securing nut A to 30 Nm (306 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.) through Special Service Tool: 09249-63010. You should attach the power steering oil pressure switch connector followed by installing the pressure feed tube assembly and gasket with proper pump housing contact before torquing the union bolt to 51.5 Nm (525 kgf-cm, 38 ft. lbs.). Follow hose installation of pump hose No. 1 to the oil reservoir while clipping it in place. Complete the procedure by attaching the V belts for the fan and generator using Special Service Tool: 09249-63010. The last procedure involves reinstalling the front fender apron seal RH and front fender liner RH while torquing the front wheel RH to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). The process concludes with power steering fluid bleeding and leak inspection.
