2001 Toyota Camry Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Power Steering Pump on 2001 Toyota Camry?
A: The first step of Power Steering Pump service requires measuring the PS vane pump rotating torque as it should smoothly rotate without sound emissions at a maximum torque of 0.3 Nm (2.8 kgf-cm, 2.4 inch lbs.) for 5S-FE along with 1MZ-FE engines. The vane pump pulley needs Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to prevent the pulley from spinning before removing the front and rear brackets by eliminating 3 bolts and 2 nuts. The procedure requires removing the bolt and O-ring from the suction port union followed by the pressure port union and flow control valve together with the spring which requires removal of the O-ring from the union. Separate the rear housing by first taking away 4 bolts and 2 O-rings and then extract the wave washer alongside side plate and gasket followed by cam ring, vane plates and rotor of the vane pump but exercise caution to prevent dropping the plate during snap ring removal from the shaft. Extract the vane pump shaft and the two straight pins which exist within the front housing. The inspection requires a micrometer and caliper gauge to measure the oil clearance between the vane pump shaft and bushing which must be between 0.03 - 0.05 mm (0.0012 - 0.0020 inch) standard and a maximum of 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch). If these specifications are not met then the front housing and vane pump shaft require replacement. Check the standard measurements of 8.6 mm (0.339 inch), 1.397 mm (0.0550 inch) and 14.991 mm (0.5902 inch) for height, thickness and length of the vane pump rotor and plates then inspect the space between rotor groove and plates with maximum 0.035 mm (0.0014 inch) clearance while also performing replace checks. The procedure for inspecting the flow control valve requires power steering fluid coating on the valve followed by a smooth fall into the valve hole; leakage testing occurs through compressed air application with 392 - 490 kPa (4 - 5 kgf/cm2, 57 - 71 psi) of pressure; a replacement valve must be used if needed with matching inscribed mark (A, B, C, D, E, or F). Compute the free spring length which must exceed at least 32.3 mm (1.272 inches) then replace it if out of specifications. Tools 09950-60010 (09951-00330) and 09950-70010 (09951-07100) will help correctly install the new oil seal after carefully inserting it next to the vinyl tape-wrapped screwdriver with power steering fluid on its lip. To assemble the component combine power steering fluid with all parts then connect the vane pump shaft together with straight pins through plastic hammer use until the cam ring stands aligned with its inscribed mark visible from the outside before placing the rotor followed by its snap ring. Stack the ten vane plates with round edges toward the outside while adding a new gasket followed by a side plate and wave washer for precise positioning. The rear housing requires 2 new power steering fluid-coated O-rings before you install it with appropriate torque settings of 24 Nm (240 kgf-cm, 17 ft. lbs.) for the 4 bolts. Subsequently, add the spring and flow control valve together with the pressure port union. Pay attention to valve orientation and ensure both the new O-ring and pressure port union have power steering fluid coating before torquing the connection to 83 Nm (850 kgf-cm, 62 ft. lbs.). Begin by tightening the suction port union bolt to 13 Nm while applying power steering fluid onto its new O-ring. Next, torque the front and rear brackets at 43 Nm before finishing with the two nuts. Install the pulley on the PS vane pump using Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to prevent rotation and torque the retaining nut to 43 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.) followed by the rotating torque measurement.
