2000 Toyota Camry Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Power Steering Pump on 2000 Toyota Camry?
A: The service and repair of Power Steering Pump depends on verifying a maximum torque of 0.3 Nm (2.8 kgf.cm, 2.4 inch lbs.) when rotating PS vane pump smoothly with no abnormal noise for 5S-FE and 1MZ-FE engines. The vane pump pulley needs Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to prevent pulley rotation before removing the front and rear brackets through three bolts and two nuts. The procedure begins by uninstalling the suction port union by unfastening its bolt along with its O-ring before moving on to the pressure port union together with the flow control valve and spring while taking care to recover the O-ring from the union. The rear housing removal process begins by taking out 4 bolts alongside 2 O-rings before extracting the wave washer alongside the side plate and gasket and cam ring and all 10 vane plates and vane pump rotor from the assembly. Keep a close eye on the plate during snap ring removal from the vane pump shaft. Orderly remove the vane pump shaft together with both straight pins from the front housing area. Test the vane pump shaft's oil clearance against the bushing through micrometer and caliper gauge measurements because standard values fall between 0.03 - 0.05 mm (0.0012 - 0.0020 inch) yet maximum clearance reaches 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch). Replacements must be done if either component shows issues. Check the specifications of vane pump rotor and vane plates for height, thickness, and length which need to be at least 8.6 mm (0.339 inch) and 1.397 mm (0.0550 inch) and 14.991 mm (0.5902 inch) respectively while the maximum clearances between the rotor groove and plate should be 0.035 mm (0.0014 inch); use parts with the same mark stamped on the cam ring (1, 2, 3, 4, or None). Towards valve inspection apply power steering fluid on the flow control valve and observe it smoothly descending into the valve hole followed by the compressed air leakage check under 392 - 490 kPa (4 - 5 kgf/cm2, 57 - 71 psi) pressure; install a new valve with matching inscribed mark (A, B, C, D, E, or F). The measurement of spring free length must be 32.3 mm (1.272 inch) minimum; replace the spring when the measurement fails to meet specification. A screwdriver wrapped in vinyl tape must be used to remove the oil seal carefully before installing a new oil seal lip coated in power steering fluid with the help of Special Service Tools: 09950-60010 (09951-00330) and 09950-70010 (09951-07100). The proper installation direction must be followed. After coating relevant parts with power steering fluid users should install the vane pump shaft before tapping in two new straight pins using a plastic hammer. Place the cam ring holes over straight pins while fitting the rotor by its inscribed mark outside before adding a new snap ring. Place the round-end of the ten vanes outside the unit while installing a fresh gasket then side plate and wave washer before the rear housing. Before installation, coat both new O-rings with power steering fluid. Torque the four bolts to 24 Nm (240 kgf.cm or 17 ft. lbs.) when working on 5S-FE and 1MZ-FE engines. Install the spring then the flow control valve next to the pressure port unit while facing the correct direction and coating a new O-ring with power steering fluid before torqueing the units to 83 Nm (850 kgf.cm, 62 ft. lbs.) for 5S-FE and 1MZ-FE engines. Fitting begins with the suction port union and a new O-ring which should receive power steering fluid coating then the bolt receives 13 Nm (130 kgf.cm, 9 ft. lbs.) torque for 5S-FE and 1MZ-FE engines. Install the front and rear brackets with 3 bolts and 2 nuts while applying torque to 43 Nm (440 kgf.cm, 32 ft. lbs.) for 5S-FE and 1MZ-FE engines before using Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to prevent the pulley from rotating then torques the nut to 43 Nm (440 kgf.cm, 32 ft. lbs.) for 5S-FE and 1MZ-FE engines. Finish by checking the PS vane pump rotating torque.
