2000 Toyota Camry Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove and install the Rack And Pinion on 2000 Toyota Camry?
A: The process for removing the rack and pinion starts with facing the front wheels straight before removing both the steering wheel pad and the steering wheel. The nut needs removal for disconnecting the RH and LH tie rod ends, intermediate shaft assembly and clamp plate. The technician uses Special Service Tool: 09631-22020 to disconnect pressure feed and return tubes and extract the two O-rings. The stabilizer bar can stay connected as the technician removes the four bolts. The Rack And Pinion assembly removal begins with two bolted nut removal from the No.1 fuel tube protector followed by Rack And Pinion assembly extraction from the LH side by rising the stabilizer bar as needed and carefully preventing damage to turn pressure tubes. Before installing the Rack And Pinion assembly from the left-hand side position make sure turn pressure tubes remain safe then torque 2 Rack And Pinion assembly set bolts and nuts to 181 Nm (1,850 kgf.cm, 134 ft. lbs.). Ensure lifting the stabilizer bar if needed during installation. Connect the No.1 fuel tube protector by fastening its bolts and nut to the system. The stabilizer bar needs connection after which you should torque the 4 bolts to 19 Nm (195 kgf.cm, 14 ft. lbs.). Install 2 new O-rings before connecting the pressure feed and return tubes using Special Service Tool: 09631-22020 according to set parameters of torque to 32 Nm (326 kgf.cm, 24 ft. lbs.). The torque application requires a torque wrench with a 300 mm (11.81 inch) fulcrum length for accurate tensioning. Connect the clamp plate before torquing its nut to 10 Nm (100 kgf.cm, 7 ft. lbs.) afterward install the intermediate shaft assembly with the RH and LH tie rod ends. Set the front wheels directly forward while jacking up the vehicle and put the spiral cable in the center before inserting the steering wheel at its straight-ahead position with a temporary wheel set nut tightening and connector installation. The technician must bleed the power steering system then verify the center point of the steering wheel and finally torque the steering wheel set nut to 35 Nm (360 kgf.cm, 26 ft. lbs.). The last step includes installing the steering wheel pad and conducting front wheel alignment checks.
