2001 Toyota Camry Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove and install the Rack And Pinion on 2001 Toyota Camry?
A: First position the front wheels at zero degree then take off the steering wheel pad followed by the steering wheel. The removal of the rack and pinion starts with unfastening the right hand (RH) and left hand (LH) tie rod ends and intermediate shaft assembly and clamp plate through nut removal. Remove the 2 O-rings once you detach the pressure feed and return tubes using Special Service Tool: 09023-12700. Use an organ to disconnect the stabilizer bar after unbolt its four anchor points without removing the bar. Remove the No.1 fuel tube protector by disassembling its 2 bolts and nut until you can extract the PS rack and pinion assembly by taking out 2 Rack And Pinion assembly set bolts and nuts after lifting the stabilizer bar when needed while being cautious to protect turn pressure tubes. Begin PS rack and pinion assembly installation on the left hand (LH) side before tightening 2 Rack And Pinion assembly set bolts and nuts to 181 Nm (1,850 kgf-cm, 134 ft. lbs.). Afterward, install the No.1 fuel tube protector with its 2 bolts and nut. The installation requires attachment of the stabilizer bar followed by torqueing all 4 bolts to 19 Nm (195 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.). The pressure feed and return tubes need to be connected using two new O-rings with Special Service Tool: 09023-12700 according to specifications for a torque setting of 23 Nm (235 kgf-cm, 17 ft. lbs.). First connect the clamp plate and torque its nut to 10 Nm (100 kgf-cm, 7 ft. lbs.). Next connect the intermediate shaft assembly along with the right hand (RH) and left hand (LH) tie rod ends. Align front wheels directly forward and center the spiral cable before putting in the steering wheel at zero degrees position. Use a temporary torque on the wheel set nut and attach the connector. The power steering bleeding must occur followed by checking the steering wheel center point and setting the steering wheel set nut to achieve 50 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 35 ft. lbs.) torque. After pad installation the front wheel alignment must be inspected.
