2003 Toyota Camry Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2003 Toyota Camry?
A: Start power steering repair and service operations by first removing the front wheel on the right side but alternate with draining power steering fluid and then removing the front fender liner on the right side and the front fender apron seal on the right side. Use Special Service Tool: 09249-63010 to remove the fan and generator V belt before disconnecting the oil reservoir to pump hose No.1 by removing its clip while avoiding fluid contact with the V belt. Disconnect the pressure feed tube assembly by first removing the power steering oil pressure switch connector and afterward using a spanner (27 mm) to position the pressure port union while you remove the union bolt along with the gasket. The vane pump assembly removal involves disconnecting the oil pressure switch connector while using Special Service Tool: 09249-63010 for loosening bolt A followed by bolt B removal. Subsequently, secure the vane pump assembly within a vise with Special Service Tool: 09630-00014 (09631-00132) through its aluminum plate. Detach the power steering suction port union along with the O-ring followed by removal of the pressure port union and its associated O-ring. Pull out the flow control valve and flow control valve compression spring along with the power steering oil pressure switch being sure not to let them fall. After removing the four bolts, O-ring and w/pulley shaft sub-assembly and vane pump rotor with its ten vane pump plates, you can access the vane pump housing rear. Take the vane pump cam ring and vane pump side plate front from each other while removing their O-rings. Operation of the vane pump housing oil seal requires Special Service Tool: 09631-10030 with a hammer tool for tapping while protecting the bushing from damage. The micrometer and caliper gauge should determine the oil clearance which must fall between standard and maximum values. Perform measurements to determine the height and thickness along with length of the vane pump rotor while validating maximum clearance with the help of a feeler gauge. The vane pump assembly requires replacement if free length measurements of the flow control valve compression spring or operation and leakage inspection of the flow control valve fall outside specified specifications. A new pressure port union should be installed if damage is observed. Place the new oil seal in the correct position while coating it with power steering fluid before installing the vane pump side plate front and cam ring by properly aligning their dents. The w/pulley shaft sub-assembly and the vane pump rotor with the inscribed mark facing outwards, then the vane pump plates and a new snap ring need to be installed. The vane pump housing rear requires new O-ring installation while maintaining proper alignment before tightening bolts to 22 Nm (224 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.). The vane pump should revolve with less than 0.27 Nm torque (2.8 kgf-cm / 2.4 inch lbs.) before installing the power steering oil pressure switch using a new O-ring and proper torque to 21 Nm (214 kgf-cm / 15 ft. lbs.). The service technician must install the flow control valve compression spring alongside the flow control valve and the pressure port union with a new O-ring before torquing it to 69 Nm (704 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.). Following this, the power steering suction port union gets installed with a new O-ring and torqued to 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). The vane pump assembly installation requires first wrenching bolt A then screwing bolt B and achieving 43 Nm (438 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.) torque followed by tightening bolt A to 30 Nm (306 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.) using Special Service Tool: 09249-63010. Position the pressure feed tube assembly and gasket to the vane pump as the stopper reaches the pump housing front before twisting the union bolt to 51.5 Nm (525 kgf-cm, 38 ft. lbs.). Reinstall the fan and generator V belt with Special Service Tool: 09249-63010 while connecting the oil reservoir to pump hose No.1 and installing the clip. Install the front fender apron seal RH together with the front fender liner RH and the front wheel RH followed by a torque of 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) on the wheel. After which bleed the power steering fluid and check for leaks.
