2004 Toyota Camry Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2004 Toyota Camry?
A: Service and repair of the power steering pump starts by removing the front wheel RH before draining power steering fluid and uninstalling both the front fender liner RH and front fender apron seal RH. Disconnection of Oil reservoir to pump hose No.1 requires removing the clip while avoiding V belt fluid spillage. Proceed to disconnect the power steering oil pressure switch while extracting its connector and switch from the union bolt while being alert against dropping it but consider replacement when damage occurs. Disassemble the pressure feed hose through a 24 mm spanner procedure which retains the pressure port union before extracting its union bolt along with the gasket material. Open the vane pump V belt by getting rid of its two bolts before extracting the vane pump assembly with both bolts removed. You need to stop the vane pump pulley rotation using Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to loosen its nut and afterward remove the nut and pulley. Begin by removing both the suction port union with its O-ring from the power steering system and continuing to take off the pressure port union alongside its O-ring. The procedure requires removing the flow control valve while taking away its compression spring followed by removing the vane pump bracket rear according to the vane pump type (Type A with 2 bolts, Type B with 2 bolts and 2 nuts). The vane pump housing rear can be removed by dismantling first all 4 bolts with their gasket and then removing the pair of O-rings. Start by disassembling the vane pump side plate rear together with its wave washer then proceed with removing the vane pump cam ring and rotor while paying attention to separate the 10 vane pump plates and snap ring on the shaft. The Type A design requires users to remove only the vane pump shaft yet the Type B design requires removal of the w/pulley shaft sub-assembly. Use Special Service Tool: 09631-10030 and a hammer to gently tap out the vane pump housing oil seal while protecting the bushing from harm and remove the pump bracket front by first taking off its bolt. The health of the vane pump assembly depends on micrometer and caliper gauge inspections of oil clearance levels with standard and maximum limits used for making replacement decisions. Seamlessly measure the vane pump rotor together with its plates then assess their height and thickness as well as the groove plate clearance until replacement occurs when measurements exceed standard specifications. Test the flow control valve function by soaking it with power steering fluid and inspect both its operational smoothness and leakage; perform replacement if needed. Replace the flow control valve compression spring as well as its assembly if the free length measurement deviates from specified dimensions. A replacement of the pressure port union becomes necessary in case of detected damage. Install a new vane pump housing oil seal by using Special Service Tools: 09950-0010 (09951-00330), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) along with a press with correct orientation while coating it with power steering fluid. Front pump bracket assembly should be installed with a torque of 43 Nm for Type A and 44 Nm for Type B. The Type A procedure requires application of power steering fluid on the inside bushing of the vane pump housing front followed by inserting the vane pump shaft. Similarly Type B requires the same process except with the w/pulley shaft sub-assembly. After installing the vane pump rotor and its snap ring it should be followed by placing the vane pump cam ring correctly while maintaining the proper alignment for vane pump plates with their new gasket. Screw the front side plate of the vane pump while applying an O-ring seal that should fit the cam ring correctly then put in the wave washer. Place a new O-ring for the vane pump housing rear into power steering fluid before installing it with four bolts that receive 24 Nm torque. The PS vane pump rotation torque must be measured for both types until smooth operation occurs while keeping torque levels under 0.27 Nm. First, torque the specified amounts on the vane pump bracket rear then add and install the flow control valve compression spring and flow control valve which have received power steering fluid coating. Begin by installing the pressure port union and torquing it to 83 Nm before proceeding to install the power steering suction port union with a coated O-ring and torques to 13 Nm. For Type A installation use Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to install the vane pump pulley and nut to a torque of 44 Nm. First install the vane pump assembly using two bolts and after that install the vane pump V belt followed by tension adjustment before torquing both bolts to 43 Nm. Connect the pressure feed hose with correct torque after installing the power steering oil pressure switch along with its connector. The technician will hook the oil reservoir back to hose No.1 while installing the front fender apron seal on the RH side, the front fender liner on the RH side, and the front wheel on the RH side. Torque the components to 103 Nm. The power steering fluid needs bleeding before finishing off the inspection for fluid leaks.
