2005 Toyota Camry Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2005 Toyota Camry?
A: Service and repair of the power steering pump starts with removing the front wheel right side followed by draining power steering fluid then removing both front fender liner RH and front fender apron seal RH. Use Special Service Tool: 09249-63010 to remove the generator and fan V belt and detach the oil reservoir to pump hose No.1 by removing its retaining clip. The pressure feed tube assembly requires removal by first detaching the power steering oil pressure switch connector followed by holding the pressure port union with a spanner (27 mm) for bolt and gasket removal. To remove the vane pump assembly start by detaching the oil pressure switch connector and using Special Service Tool: 09249-63010 with a 14 mm deep socket to loosen bolt A and then remove bolt B. After that the vise should hold the vane pump assembly in place through the aluminum plate using Special Service Tool: 09630-00014 (09631-00132). You must first remove the pressure port union along with O-ring from the power steering suction port union before taking out the O-ring from the pressure port union. The technician next removes the flow control valve and flow control valve compression spring and power steering oil pressure switch while avoiding dropping the switch. The vane pump housing rear requires removal by taking out its 4 bolts and removing the O-ring followed by the w/pulley shaft sub-assembly and the vane pump rotor with its 10 vane pump plates. Detach the vane pump cam ring while removing the front side plate of the vane pump along with its O-rings from both components. Use Special Service Tool: 09631-10030 together with a hammer to tap the vane pump housing oil seal while protecting the bushing from damage during the process. A micrometer combined with a caliper gauge should be used to check oil clearance which needs to remain inside set standards. The height and thickness of vane pump rotor and plates need measurement alongside length assessment through use of a feeler gauge to check various clearances. Check whether the flow control valve works without restrictions then verify for leakage before determining the free length of the flow control valve compression spring. The vane pump assembly requires new components for all parts that exceed specifications or show signs of damage. The new oil seal needs to be treated with power steering fluid before its installation in the correct orientation. Fasten the vane pump side plate front to the cam ring by aligning their dents accurately. First place the vane pump plates together with the w/pulley shaft sub-assembly before adding the vane pump rotor whose inscribed mark should face outward. The installation of a new snap ring begins after the w/pulley shaft sub-assembly. Attach the vane pump housing rear section to its installed bolts while using a fresh O-ring and verify correct alignment followed by bolt torque up to 22 Nm (224 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.). Check the vane pump rotation torque for both smooth performance and compliance to the technical requirements. A new O-ring should accompany the power steering oil pressure switch installation before torquing it to 21 Nm (214 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.). The technician installs the flow control valve compression spring along with the flow control valve after coating them with power steering fluid. Start by installing the pressure port union with a brand new O-ring, torque this to 69 Nm (704 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.), then proceed to install the power steering suction port union using its O-ring, torque to 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). First tighten bolt A of the vane pump assembly only for now, followed by bolt B installation and torqueing to 43 Nm (438 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.), before tightening bolt A to 30 Nm (306 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.) using Special Service Tool: 09249-63010. Screw in the pressure feed tube assembly along with its gasket until the stopper touches the pump housing front before torquing the union bolt to 51.5 Nm (525 kgf-cm, 38 ft. lbs.). Attach oil reservoir hose no.1 to the reservoir before installing its securing device. Use Special Service Tool 09249-63010 to install the fan and generator V belt and proceed to install the front fender apron seal RH, front fender liner RH followed by torquing the front wheel RH to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). The power steering fluid requires bleeding and a leak inspection should be conducted at the end of the installation process.
