- Q: How to service and repair the Rack And Pinion on 2005 Toyota Camry?A: Before starting rack and pinion service and repair the designated parts need to be treated with either power steering fluid or molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease. Start by disconnecting the battery negative cable and then take off the steering wheel assembly and the horn button assembly with Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09950-05021). The service begins by removing the front steering wheel and spiral cable sub-assembly before disconnecting both tie rod assemblies using Special Service Tool: 0962-62011. Loosen the bolt and remove the clamp on the steering intermediate shaft sub-assembly while marking the positions before separating it. Both sides of the front stabilizer link assemblies require disconnection followed by front stabilizer bracket removal while using Special Service Tool: 09023-12700 to disconnect the pressure feed tube assembly and return tube assembly. In order to replace components of the rack and pinion power steering assembly technicians must first remove this assembly along with the power steering rack housing heat insulator (1MZ-FE engine type) and both left and right turn pressure tubes by using Special Service Tool: 09023-38200. Secure the rack and pinion power steering assembly with Special Service Tool: 09612-0012 and then proceed to take off and check the torque levels of both left and right tie rod assemblies. Before removing rack and pinion boots users must first disconnect boot clips and clamps while taking care to avoid causing any boot damage. The installation of Special Service Tool: 09922-10010 allows for unstaking the claw washer to remove the rack and pinion ends sub-assembly. Wound the serrated part with vinyl tape after removal of the power steering control valve and rack guide to prevent damage. Proceed with power steering control valve upper oil seal removal before discarding the cylinder end stopper and moving onto power steering rack and bush removal. The power steering rack needs inspection for runout and wear followed by removal of the power steering cylinder tube oil seal and rack steering piston ring. Install the power steering cylinder tube oil seal by using Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00420, 09951-00250, 09952-06010) and 09950-70010 (09951-07360). Also ensure the application of proper lubrication before installing a new O-ring and rack steering piston ring. First install the power steering rack with its bushing before confirming that all the seals are in the right position then add the new wire on the cylinder end stopper for installation. The air tightness must be tested with Special Service Tool: 09631-12071 (09633-00010) to verify that oil seals were installed correctly because no vacuum changes should be detected.
