2000 Toyota Tundra Control Arm Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the lower control arm on 2000 Toyota Tundra?
A: Service or repair of the lower control arm begins by extracting the front wheels from both RH and LH positions before using Special Service Tool: 09610-20012 to separate the tie rod ends from their lower ball joint position. You must remove power steering gear set bolts and nuts before you disconnect the stabilizer bar link from the lower suspension arm by taking out the nut; when mounting the ball joint turns with the nut you should hold the stud with a hexagon (6mm) wrench. Wipe off the lower side set nut and washer from the shock absorber bolt while keeping the bolt intact then secure the bolt's head with vinyl tape to shield the drive shaft boot before bending the lower suspension arm to take out the bolt for shock absorber separation. To remove the lower ball joint from the lower suspension arm use Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 along with extracting both the cotter pin and nut before beginning disconnect operations. To detach the lower suspension arm begin by marking the chassis frame and cam plates at their front and rear sections and then unfasten all cam plates and bolts alongside the lower suspension arm and cams but push the power steering gear slightly toward the back with precaution against damaging the power steering tubes. Use a hammer and chisel to raise the bushing flange and then employ Special Service Tool: 09613-26010 with the additional tools 09632-36010 and 09950-00020 and a press to extract the bushing. Set up a new No.1 bushing correctly following removal with Special Service Tool: 09502-12010 and 09631-12090 and a press and steel plate. The procedure calls for the installation of a new No. 2 bushing with Special Service Tool: 09631-12090, 09950-60020 (09951-00680) and press and steel plate while maintaining correct orientation. The on-vehicle replacement of the No. 1 spring bumper requires using Special Service Tool: 09922-10010 to remove the front wheel before applying a torque of 23 Nm (235 kgf-cm, 17 ft. lbs.) and using the same tool to replace the No. 2 spring bumper by removing the stabilizer bar with the same torque specifications followed by stabilizer bar and front wheel reinstallation using a torque of 110 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 81 ft. lbs.). The procedure for installation requires users to slide the power steering gear slightly backward during which they must apply 130 Nm (1,325 kgf-cm, 96 ft. lbs.) of torque and adjust the matchmarks between the front and rear cam plates and chassis frame. To fix the lower ball joint to the lower suspension arm use a nut and new cotter pin while applying torque at 140 Nm (1,450 kgf-cm, 103 ft. lbs.) before continuing to apply 60 degrees upward torque if cotter pin holes misalign. The technicians first connect the shock absorber to the lower suspension arm with 135 Nm (1,400 kgf-cm, 100 ft. lbs.) torque before securing the stabilizer bar link to the lower suspension arm with a torque of 69 Nm (700 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.). They use a hexagon wrench on the stud as needed. Install the power steering gear, applying a torque of 165 Nm (1,700 kgf-cm, 122 ft. lbs.) for bolt A, 130 Nm (1,350 kgf-cm, 96 ft. lbs.) for nut B, and 165 Nm (1,700 kgf-cm, 122 ft. lbs.) for bolt and nut C. Connect the RH and LH tie rod ends to the lower ball joints with the nuts and new cotter pins, applying a torque of 91 Nm (930 kgf-cm, 67 ft. lbs.) and tightening further up to 60 degrees if the cotter pin holes are misaligned, then install the RH and LH front wheels with a torque of 110 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 81 ft. lbs.) and check the front wheel alignment.
