Q: How to service and repair a leaf spring on 2000 Toyota Tundra?
A: A mechanic should first support the body structure with safety stands when jacking it up to lower the axle housing below the leaf spring tension level. The maintenance process starts by removing the rear wheel then moving on to disconnect the 4 U-bolt mounting nuts and washers followed by spring seat and 2 U-bolts before ending with the spring bumper. The leaf spring removal process requires users to detach the nut and washer and bolt before removing the 2 nuts with washers and bolts and shackle and leaf spring. The procedure for bushing replacement involves cutting both tabs using a saw followed by installation of Special Service Tool (09950-60010 (09951-00350)) and (09950-70010 (09951-07150)) alongside a press to push out inner tubes and rubber parts then tapping out outer tubes with both a chisel and hammer. Replace 2 bushings according to Special Service Tool: 09710-28012 (09710-07062) and 09710-30041 (09710-03211) by inputting them into a dedicated press mechanism. A chisel and a hammer aid spring clip opening to remove center bolt and nut when holding the spring inside a vise. The spring clip replacement involves drilling off the rivet head before driving it out followed by new riveting with a press. After placing the spring center bolt and nut properly you should align leaf spring holes before securing leaves in a vise and torquing to 44 Nm (450 kgf-cm, 33 ft. lbs.). Finally bend the spring clips back into place. Install the shackle with leaf spring using three bolts and washers and nuts that require torquing to 170 Nm (1,735 kgf-cm, 125 ft. lbs.) after setting the suspension system as steady. The installation requires attaching the spring bumper along with the spring seat and 2 U-bolts which should receive 4 washers and nuts torqued at 133 Nm (1,350 kgf-cm, 98 ft. lbs.). All U-bolt lengths beneath the spring seat must be consistent. The final step includes installing the rear wheel with a torque of 110 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 81 ft. lbs.) before removing the safety stands.
