2000 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Sway Bar Kit on 2000 Toyota Tundra?
A: The sway bar kit service starts with disconnecting sway bar links through the removal of the two nuts from the lower suspension arms while the ball joint requires a hexagon wrench to stabilize the stud when necessary. Repairs on the sway bar kit require first lowering and disconnecting the reservoir then taking out the 2 bolts and nuts before extracting the sway bar kit with its attached cushions and brackets. Lastly, separate the 2 brackets and cushions from the sway bar kit assembly. Begin by holding the link before removing its nut and then remove the sway bar link with proper installation of 2 retainers and bushings to the sway bar kit while repeating the same sequence on the opposite side. Check for boot damage on the sway bar link ball joint while inspecting its ball joint rotation by performing five stud flip movements before applying torque via a torque wrench in one 2-4 second turn to measure a 0.05-2.0 Nm (0.5-20 kgf-cm, 0.4-17 inch lbs.) reading at the fifth turn. Installation requires the sway bar links to be placed onto the bar followed by connecting them to the bar link with a 19 Nm (190 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.) torque, perform similar installation on the second side. Afterwards, install the bushings onto the sway bar kit with their cutout facing the rear direction. Once installed, attach the sway bar kit with its brackets and secure it using nuts and bolts which should be torqued to 25 Nm (260 kgf-cm, 19 ft. lbs. When connecting sway bar links to the lower suspension arm use 69 Nm (700 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.) torque while holding the ball joint stable because ball joint movement indicates the need for a 6 mm hexagon wrench for the nut.
