2000 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service the rear shock absorber on 2000 Toyota Tundra?
A: You should use safety stands to jack up the body before lowing the axle housing so leaf spring tension releases. The service of the rear shock absorber begins with wheel removal which leads to disassembly of the bolt and nut from the lower side before gripping the piston rod to remove the nut and all remaining components including the retainer and cushion and shock absorber. Afterwards the technician removes the two retainers and shock absorber cushions. Check the shock absorber function while compressing and extending the rod. Abnormal resistance or unusual sounds require shock absorber replacement. Extending the shock absorber rod until fully stretched before drilling a hole in the cylinder will allow removal of gas inside the device while preventing chip debris from flying. Users should exercise caution during this step. Special Service Tools 09632-36010, a 19 mm deep socket wrench and a press must be used to remove the old bushing while Special Service Tools 09630-24014 (09620-24041) and 09632-36010 and a press are necessary for installing the new bushing. You must start by connecting the 2 retainers and cushion to the shock absorber before installing it with the cushion and retainer through a nut that requires torqueing to 20 Nm (200 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.) and securing the lower side of the shock absorber with a bolt and nut that requires torqueing to 87 Nm (890 kgf-cm, 64 ft. lbs.). The rear wheel needs to be tightened to 110 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs) then safety stands should be removed.
