2001 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service the rear shock absorber on 2001 Toyota Tundra?
A: Service of the rear shock absorber begins by using safety stands to support the body at a raised position that removes leaf spring tension from the axle housing. Detach the rear shock absorber by removing its bottom-side bolt and nut while stabilizing the piston rod and then removing the nut, retainer, cushion, and shock absorber respectively which is followed by removing both retainers and cushion. A new shock absorber needs replacement if compression tests of the rod reveal any irregular resistance or peculiar noises. When disposing of the shock absorber first extend its rod completely before drilling a hole in the cylinder to let out gas while avoiding any flying debris generated by drilling. A shock absorber bushing replacement requires Special Service Tools for 09632-36010 and a 19 mm deep socket wrench along with a press device for eliminating the old bushing. The new bushing installation requires Special Service Tools 09630-24014 (09620-24041) and 09632-36010 with a press device. First install the two retainers with a cushion onto the shock absorber and tighten the nut to 20 Nm (200 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.) before adding the bolt and nut connection for the lower shock absorber side with 87 Nm (890 kgf-cm, 64 ft. lbs.) torque. The rear wheel needs installation with a torque of 110 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.) before removing the safety stands.
