2002 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the Shock Absorber on 2002 Toyota Tundra?
A: Recruiting the suspension strut for service or repair begins by performing unit disassembly. The suspension support needs free coil spring clearance when Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 (09727-00010, 09727-00021, 09727-00031) compresses the coil spring. Do not let the tool get excessively compressed nor use an impact wrench on it because damage can occur. Start the strut service by first removing the suspension support center nut and progressing to remove the two retainers, cushion, suspension support and coil spring. Check the shock absorber function by extending and compressing its rod; abnormal resistance and strange sounds require shock absorber replacement. The shock absorber rod must be fully extended before drilling a hole into the cylinder that allows discharge of inside gas while preventing chips from flying away. Use a specific service tool to compress the coil spring once more before installing the coil spring onto the shock absorber while verifying that the lower end enters the spring seat gap. Install the cushion together with two retainers and the suspension support onto the piston rod before securing the new suspension support center nut for position and adjusting the support correctly. The special service tool should be removed before checking the suspension support direction and tightening the suspension center nut to 25 Nm (250 kgf-cm, 18 ft. lbs.).
