2002 Toyota Tundra Shock Absorber Parts Q&A
Q: How to service and repair a shock absorber on 2002 Toyota Tundra?
A: The maintenance process for shock absorber service begins with body support using safety stands after which you must raise the vehicle using jacks until the leaf spring tension is fully released. The service process starts by taking away the rear wheel and then the shock absorber through lower-side bolt removal with rod holding followed by nut remover and retainer and cushion removal then removing shock absorber retainers along with its cushion. You must inspect the shock absorber through rod compression-extension movements to identify irregular resistance or strange noises; if such problems are detected you must swap it with a new unit. To dispose of the shock absorber maintain rod extension before making a hole in the cylinder while taking necessary precautions to prevent flying particles during drilling. When replacing the bushing employ Special Service Tools: 09632-36010 and 09630-24014 (09620-24041) and 09632-36010 in conjunction with a press to fulfill the operation. The installation process begins by connecting two retainers and cushion to the shock absorber followed by attaching the shock absorber with a nut while torquing to 20 Nm (200 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.). The last step is securing the lower side of the shock absorber with a bolt and nut torqued to 87 Nm (890 kgf-cm, 64 ft. lbs.). Finish the procedure by installing the rear wheel at 110 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.) torque before taking out the safety stands.
