2003 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair a shock absorber on 2003 Toyota Tundra?
A: The shock absorber service process begins through suspension support coil spring removal from the assembly. The coil spring should be compressed with Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 (09727-00010, 09727-00021, 09727-00031) to remove it from the suspension support without overcompressing or using an impact wrench as that will damage the tool. The task starts by removing the suspension support center nut before removing each of the two retainers, cushion, suspension support, and coil spring. Check the shock absorber by functioning the rod between compression and extension to spot irregular resistance or extraordinary noises. Then conduct a shock absorber replacement if issues manifest. When discarding the shock absorber extend its rod fully before drilling a hole into the cylinder to release the air content while being cautious of potential chip debris. Reassembling the coil spring requires the use of the same Special Service Tool to position the spring on the shock absorber but avoid overdamping the spring while installing. Install the lower end of the coil spring onto the spring seat gap and add the cushion followed by two retainers and suspension support to the piston rod. Finish by tightening the new suspension support center nut temporarily. First inspect the suspension support alignment then uninstall the Special Service Tool before tightening the suspension center nut to 25 Nm (250 kgf-cm, 18 ft. lbs.).
