2000 Toyota Tundra Ball Joint Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the lower ball joint on 2000 Toyota Tundra?
A: The first step of servicing or repairing the lower ball joint involves taking off the front wheel. Leave the 4 lower ball joint set bolts slightly loose but do not fully remove them. To disconnect the tie rod end use Special Service Tool: 09610-20012 along with removing the cotter pin and nut before separating it from the lower ball joint. The lower ball joint requires Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 to disconnect it from the lower suspension arm following the removal of lower ball joint cotter pin and nut. The 4 lower ball joint set bolts should be removed first followed by the removal of the lower ball joint when elevating the upper suspension arm and steering knuckle using safe methods. Check the lower ball joint boot for damage after which inspect rotation by moving the ball joint stud five times before adding the nut. A torque wrench should be used to tighten nut at a rate of one turn during 2 to 4 seconds before stopping at the fifth turn to measure torque at 0.1 to 2.5 Nm (11-25 kgf-cm, 1-22 inch lbs.). To fit the lower ball joint properly raise both the upper suspension arm and steering knuckle before anchoring the ball joint to the lower suspension arm through the shorter bolts at first then secure it with a new set nut while installing a new cotter pin and torque the lower ball joint attachment points to 140 Nm (1,450 kgf-cm, 103 ft. lbs.). The misaligned holes of the cotter pin need an increase in the nut torque up to 60 degrees. Fasten the tie rod end to the lower ball joint through the use of a nut combined with a new cotter pin while achieving the proper torque of 91 Nm (930 kgf-cm, 67 ft. lbs.) and make adjustments to the nut as required. The front wheel needs to be installed after tightening the 4 lower ball joint set bolts to 80 Nm (820 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.) before torquing the wheel to 110 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 81 ft. lbs.). The right-hand side should be the last step in the wheel alignment check.
