2009 Scion xD Axle Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to install the axle shaft assembly on 2009 Scion xD?
A: The installation process for the front drive shaft assembly starts by applying gear oil to the inboard joint spline then aligning its splines and driving the ball and socket joint with a screwdriver and hammer while keeping the front drive shaft hole snap ring cut towards the bottom and protecting the oil seal and inboard joint boot. The same installation process must be applied to the driven shaft segment on the right-hand side. Push the front axle slightly from the vehicle to correctly position the drive shaft spline with the front axle and insert it. During this process avoid excessive movement and inspect the speed sensor rotor for any foreign objects. The front lower suspension arm should be installed onto the steering knuckle using a new castle nut with 98 Nm (1000 kgf-cm, 72 ft-lbf) torque. When the clip holes do not align users can further tighten the nut by up to 60 degrees. Position a new clip next to your installation before attaching the tie rod end to the steering knuckle that now requires a new castle nut tightened to 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft-lbf) with a new cotter pin installed. To install the front stabilizer link assembly use the nut while torquing it to 74 Nm (755 kgf-cm, 55 ft-lbf) through socket hexagon wrench 6 when the ball joint rotates with the nut motion. Fasten the front speed sensor onto the steering knuckle using a bolt with torques of 8.5 Nm before clearing away all foreign matter from the sensor tip and stabilizing its original installation angle. The next step is installing the flexible hose and speed sensor with their bolt torqued to 29 Nm while keeping the parts untwisted. Use a 30 mm socket wrench to install a new axle hub nut before torquing it to 216 Nm (2203 kgf-cm, 160 ft-lbf) using the tool together with a chisel to strike the nut with a hammer. After front wheel installation (torque at 103 Nm) perform inspections on automatic transaxle fluid and wheel alignment while adding fluids. The last step includes installing the engine underneath its cover while using 5.0 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 in-lbf) torque and performing ABS sensor signal checks.
