    Q:
How to remove and replace the axle shaft assembly on Scion xD? Posted by Customer
    A:
You can start the replacement of the axle shaft assembly by taking off the engine under cover and draining the automatic transaxle fluid in automatic transaxles and the manual transaxle oil in manual transaxles. Use Special Service Tool 09930-00010 and a hammer to remove the front wheel and front axle hub nut yet release the staked part while keeping the tool surface flat toward the top. Avoid damaging the tool or drive shaft thread. To isolate the front speed sensor start by removing bolts associated with the flexible hose before disconnecting the bolt fastened to the steering knuckle while maintaining sensor cleanliness and sensor angle orientation. Use a socket hexagon wrench 6 on the nut to separate the front stabilizer link assembly from the shock absorber but only proceed when the ball joint rotates with the nut. The process to separate the tie rod end sub-assembly requires users to first remove the cotter pin and castle nut then install Special Service Tool: 09960-20010 (spacer B) aligned properly on the tie rod end so users can employ the Special Service Tool: 09960-20010 09961-02010 to detach it from the front axle while securing the tool to prevent tool drop and protecting the ball joint dust cover along with the front disc brake dust cover. Install Special Service Tool: 09960-20010 (spacer B) on the lower ball joint of the front suspension arm. After ensuring alignment apply Special Service Tool: 09960-20010 09961-02010 to detach it from the front axle assembly while using the tool to protect both dust covers. Pushing the front axle out of position requires tapping the drive shaft with a plastic hammer to detach the front axle disassembly or treating the drive shaft with both hammer and bracket to complete separation. Separate the LH front drive shaft assembly by using Special Service Tool: 09520-01010 09520-24010, protecting the oil seal and inboard joint boot, followed by using a screwdriver and hammer to remove the RH front drive shaft assembly in a similar manner. Use Special Service Tools 09608-02021 and 09608-16042 and 09608-02041 to fasten the front axle assembly while keeping in mind that unsupported hub bearing exposure to the vehicle weight might lead to damage.
