2008 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove the timing chain on 2008 Toyota RAV4?
A: A proper method to extract the timing chain from a 2AZ-FE engine begins with unwiring the negative battery terminal while observing a minimum 90-second wait to disable Air Bag functions. Start the procedure by unscrewing the radiator support opening cover, front wheel RH, No. 1 engine under cover, front fender apron RH and No. 1 engine cover tenders. The procedure starts by draining engine oil followed by extraction of the front exhaust pipe alongside the front suspension member reinforcement RH and fan and generator V belt and generator assembly. The radiator reservoir requires bolt removal before proceeding to detach the engine mounting insulator RH and following the process of disconnecting wire harness protectors and engine wire clamps using a transmission jack to support the engine while utilizing the 4 bolts and 2 nuts. Memorize the order to take off engine mounting insulator FR, idler pulley, ignition coil assembly, spark plug, and cylinder head cover sub-assembly, along with disconnection of ventilation hoses and engine wire needed steps. Use the engine hangers as well as a sling device to remove the oil pan sub-assembly after installation of bolts and removal of 12 bolts and 2 nuts while carefully cutting away the sealer material to separate the oil pan. To set the No. 1 cylinder at TDC/compression position you must align both the crankshaft pulley groove with the timing mark "0" and the camshaft timing gear and sprocket marks. The crankshaft pulley removal requires the Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 91651-60855 to secure the pulley before uninstalling the No. 1 chain tensioner assembly, engine mounting bracket RH and V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly with an engine lifter from a transmission jack. First detach the crankshaft position sensor before carefully removing the timing chain cover sub-assembly with an E10 "TORX" socket to loosen the V-ribbed belt tensioner stud bolt and next removing the 12 bolts and 2 nuts and using the socket to remove the cover sub-assembly. The technician must turn the crankshaft counterclockwise 90 degrees to align the oil pump drive shaft sprocket adjusting hole before installing a 4 mm diameter bar to lock the position. The technician then removes the nut, bolt, chain tensioner plate, spring, oil pump drive sprocket, oil pump drive shaft sprocket, and No. 2 chain in succession.
