Q: How to disassemble the rear axle shaft on 2008 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: You must use a snap ring expander to take out the rear axle shaft snap ring as the initial step of disassembly. Press out the rear axle shaft using Special Service Tools 09521-25011 09521-60010 and a press which allows removal of the rear axle bearing inner retainer and the rear axle shaft washer from the axle hub. The rear axle bearing inner race surface requires grinding with a grinder before you use a chisel for removal. Use only new nuts to secure the housing bolts of the left-hand side rear axle hub and bearing assembly while temporarily installing four new nuts to the bolts. Start by using a hammer to eliminate the 4 housing bolts together with the rear axle hub and bearing. Finally remove the 4 nuts staying with the operation. Special Service Tool: 09650-17011 enables the removal of the 5 hub bolts with proper alignment of the tool notch to the flange of the oil deflector until the deflector and gasket separate from the rear axle shaft.
