2008 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove the axle shaft assembly on 2008 Toyota Avalon?
A: The front drive shaft assembly removal process starts with removing the engine under cover on the LH side followed by draining automatic transaxle fluid through drain plug removal. Then reinstall new gasket and drain plug tightened to 500 kgf-cm with a torque of 49 Nm (36 ft-lbf). Use Special Service Tool: 09930-00010 with a hammer to free the staked part on the front axle shaft LH nut while completely unlatching it to protect the drive shaft screw. First remove the front axle hub LH nut when the brakes are engaged and then disconnect the front stabilizer link assembly LH by taking off the nut together with a 6mm hexagon wrench when the ball joint turns with the nut. Work to remove the speed sensor front LH by uninstalling its bolt followed by its clip while making sure the sensor stays untouched by foreign materials and remains undamaged. LH tie rod end sub-assembly can be separated from the steering knuckle using Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 but the ball joint dust cover must be protected against damage while using this procedure. Use the necessary tools to uninstall the bolt along with two nuts that will detach the front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No.1 LH from its connection to the ball joint. Use a plastic hammer to detach the front drive shaft assembly LH from the front axle hub sub-assembly LH while marking both components prior to separation. Keep a close eye on avoiding damage to the drive shaft boot and speed sensor rotor while performing the process. Disassemble the Left Hand (LH) front drive shaft assembly with Special Service Tool: 09520-01010, 09520-24010, 09520-32040 while taking precaution to protect the dust cover, boot and oil seal., and be cautious about the potential loss of the assembly. The front drive shaft assembly RH requires removal of the bearing bracket hole snap ring using a screwdriver before uninstalling the bolt which will free the assembly from drive shaft bearing bracket without boot or oil seal damage. The front axle hub bearing repair requires Special Service Tools 09608-02021, 09608-16042, and 09608-02041 for installation because full weight application without appropriate supports might result in bearing damage.
