2007 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the axle shaft assembly on 2007 Toyota Avalon?
A: The first step for front drive shaft assembly servicing starts with unmounting the engine under cover LH and draining automatic transaxle fluid by removing the drain plug and fitting a new gasket before torquing the drain plug to 49 N m (500 kgf cm, 36 ft. lbf). Begin by using Special Service Tool: 09930-00010 and a hammer to loosen the front axle hub LH nut along with the front wheel until the staked part becomes free without harming the drive shaft screw during the detachment. Separate the front stabilizer link assembly by taking out its nut. In case the ball joint rotates freely, apply a 6 mm hexagon wrench to secure the stud while working. Detach the speed sensor front LH by removing the bolt and clip while maintaining its contamination-free state before using Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 to separate the tie rod end sub-assembly LH. Remove the front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No.1 LH by taking out the bolt and two nuts after which separate the front axle assembly LH through matchpoint marks and plastic hammer use. The front drive shaft assembly LH requires removal using Special Service Tool: 09520-01010, 09520-24010 (09520-32040) while protecting the dust cover, boot and oil seal. You must unfasten the front drive shaft assembly RH by taking out its bearing bracket hole snap ring and bolt to separate it from the drive shaft bearing bracket. Apply Special Service Tool: 09608-16042 (09608-02021, 09608-02041) to fix the front axle hub sub-assembly LH with caution to prevent the hub bearing from coming under the vehicle weight without support. The front drive inner shaft outer LH shaft snap ring should be removed in addition to inboard joint boot clamps for proper disassembly of the assembly which requires separating the inboard joint boot from the assembly. The assembly requires removal of the inboard joint component LH by marking the matchpoints before avoiding punch usage. Detach both the outboard joint boot clamps so you can remove the front drive shaft damper LH while greasing the outboard joint boot. Special Service Tool: 09950-00020 together with a press should be used to remove the dust covers before inspecting the front drive shaft assembly for boot damage and excessive play. Introduction of new bearing bracket hole snap ring requires Special Service Tool: 09527-30010, 09527-10011 and a steel plate to install a new front drive shaft bearing followed by complete bearings installation. Use Special Service Tool: 09726-40010 combined with 09527-10011, a press, and a press to mount new dust covers so they reach their full position. Place the outboard joint boot onto the surface while filling it with grease (120 to 140 grams) before clamping it into position using measurements from Special Service Tool: 09240-00020. Install the drive shaft damper LH before placing the front axle inboard joint boot and its clamp. The installation of front drive shaft assembly LH and RH requires ATF coating on splines followed by proper torque application to both the front axle hub LH and the front wheel according to specifications. The front axle hub requires a torque of 294 N m (3,000 kgf cm, 217 ft. lbf while the front wheel needs 103 N m (1,050 kgf cm, 76 ft. lbf). First check and inspect the automatic transaxle fluid then adjust the front wheel alignment before reinstalling the engine undercover on the left-hand side while verifying the ABS speed sensor signal.
