2008 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Power Steering Pump on 2008 Toyota 4Runner?
A: Begin vane pump service by rotating the power steering vane pump torque and testing its normal movement with no unusual sounds then verifying the torque level with a torque wrench should be less than 0.28 Nm or 2.8 kgf-cm or 2.4 in-lbf. Special Service Tools: 09960-10010, and 09962-01000 enable vane pump pulley stoppage before unfastening the nut and pulley from the vane pump shaft. First remove the power steering suction port union by taking out its bolt and union before extracting the O-ring. Pull out the pressure port union by first removing its flow control valve along with the spring, then disengage the O-ring. Detach the vane pump rear housing by taking out four bolts and use a plastic hammer to gently separate stuck wave washers and side plates, then remove the two O-rings that are located inside the housing. The service procedure starts with taking out the side plate and wave washer followed by the cam ring that requires removing its snap ring from the vane pump shaft using a screwdriver. Continue by extracting the vane pump rotor and the accompanying ten vane plates while maintaining precautions against drops. Extract the shaft of the vane pump with both of its attached straight pins from the front housing. A screwdriver with vinyl tape wrapped on its tip can remove the housing oil seal while maintaining safe handling of both the vane pump front housing and selecting a vise tightening method.
