2007 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2007 Toyota 4Runner?
A: You should start power steering service and pump repair by first draining fluid and then removing the air cleaner assembly. Use counterclockwise motion on the belt tensioner device to remove the vane pump V belt. Start by disconnecting the oil reservoir to pump hose No. 1 after removing its clips and vacuum hoses then unfasten the pressure feed tube assembly by taking out the union bolt with its gasket. The vane pump assembly removal starts with bolt and nut fastener extraction followed by applying a "torx" socket (E10) to remove the stud bolt. Before removing the nut and vane pump pulley the technician must use Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to stop pulley rotation. Also verify the vane pump rotating torque at or below 0.28 Nm (2.8 kgf/cm, 2.4 in. lbs.). Remove successively the suction port union with its O-ring from the power steering assembly followed by the pressure port union with flow control valve and spring while extracting the pressure port O-ring. Throw away the vane pump rear housing after you unfasten its 4 bolts while you might need to strike the wave washer and side plate loose using a plastic hammer. Take off the vane pump cam ring snap ring to then remove the rotor with 10 plates from the vane pump without dropping any components. Extract the housing oil seal by sliding a vinyl tape-wrapped screwdriver between the front housing and the 2 straight pins. After that, remove the vane pump shaft along with the pins. Check the oil clearing space using calibrated measuring tools to verify conformity with 0.03 to 0.05 mm (0.0012 to 0.0020 in.) standard range and maximum limit of 0.07 mm (0.0028 in.). Measure each of the ten vane plates for height, thickness, length then check their minimum specifications while evaluating the vane pump rotor groove's clearance with the vane plate and replace exceeding components that exceed 0.033 mm (0.00130 in.) clearance. The flow control valve should undergo a smoothness check for leakage while replacement is mandatory if observed and the free length of the flow control valve compression spring needs replacement if it measures less than 33.2 mm (1.307 in.). Replace the pressure port union if evidence shows damage to its seat region. Before sealing the new oil seal into position use power steering fluid to coat its lip then apply Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00320) or 09950-70010 (09951-07100) to push the seal through correctly. Rephrase the vane pump shaft installation by tapping new straight pins into place using a plastic hammer. Begin by inserting the cam ring and rotor with outward-facing marks while placing the snap ring followed by 10 plates in correct orientation of their gasket. The rear housing with wave washer and new O-rings goes through the side plate holes which should be aligned with straight pins then bolts must be tightened to 24 Nm (240 kgf/cm, 17 ft. lbs.). Install the pressure port union along with its spring and flow control valve onto the assembly while also applying power steering fluid to the O-ring before tightening it to 83 Nm (850 kgf/cm, 61 ft. lbs.). Fit the suction port union to the vane pump assembly while ensuring a new O-ring and tight it down to 13 Nm (130 kgf/cm. 9 ft. lbs.). Install the vane pump pulley together with the nut while applying Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to tighten the new pulley set nut to 44 Nm (449 kgf/cm, 32 ft. lbs.). Verify the vane pump rotating torque reading by measuring it once more to ensure it measures 0.28 Nm (2.8 kgf/cm, 2.4 in. lbs.) or less. The vane pump assembly gets installed with a "torx" socket (E10) to tighten the stud bolt to 22 Nm (224 kgf/cm, 16 ft. lbs.) before securing the 2 bolts and nut to 43 Nm (438 kgf/cm, 32 ft. lbs.). The installation process includes replacing the vane pump V belt and using a new gasket to connect the pressure feed tube assembly before securing the oil reservoir to pump hose No. 1. Perform the following steps to finish the task by installing the air cleaner assembly along with power steering fluid addition and system bleeding then check for fluid leaks.
